Sundays 8.30am to 4.00pm

Hazel Court accept most types of household waste from paper and card to bricks and rubble. They do not accept items such as petrol, diesel, chemicals and tyres.

Towthorpe and Strensall Household Waste Recycling Centre

March: 8.30am to 5.00pm
April to September: 8.30am to 7.00pm
October: 8.30am to 5.00pm
November to February: 8.30am to 4.00pm

Towthorpe and Strensall also accept most types of household waste. Textiles, garden waste, electrical equipment etc. They do not accept porcelain bathroom suites, bricks or rubble etc.

Trips to the recycling centre can be time-consuming. You also risk damaging your vehicle when carrying waste. If you do not have a vehicle, then you are not permitted to use the recycling centre. This is because they do not allow people to carry items into the tip by hand.

A Century of York Incinerators

You’ll have seen the giant incinerator at Allerton Park. It was said to be North Yorkshire’s answer to waste disposal for the next 25 years. Generating enough electricity to power 60,000 houses.


But did you know York already had an incinerator, over a century ago? Similar to Allerton Park, the remains can be seen on Foss Islands Road where all that still stands is the chimney.
